The Swaner Preserve and EcoCenter is pleased to announce a special exhibition called Utah Wilderness 50.
This exhibit features 50 photographs that were selected through a juried process from more than 1,400 entries. All photos represent Utah public lands and reflect the spirit of the Wilderness Act of 1964.

The Wilderness Act of 1964 established an American definition of wilderness:
- "A wilderness, in contrast with those areas where man and his own works dominate the landscape, is hereby recognized as an area where the earth and its community of life are untrammeled by man, where man himself is a visitor who does not remain."
With President Lyndon Johnson's signature in 1964, the Wilderness Act preserved more than nine million acres of wild lands as open space for generations to come, with nearly 100 million more added in the subsequent five decades.
The judges include internationally recognized photographer/writers James Kay, Tom Till, Rosalie Winard, and Stephen Trimble.
This special exhibition is part of a larger national commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the Wilderness Act.
Additional activities for youth and adults:
- Utah Wilderness 50 Children's Photographic Experience
- The film "The Wilderness Act: 50th Anniversary" showing in our Theater Room
