Fort Douglas was designated as a National Historical Landmark in 1970. Over one hundred original structures from 1863 through World War II are preserved by the University of Utah, the U.S. Army Reserve, and the Fort Douglas Museum.

The mission of the Fort Douglas Museum is to collect, preserve, and interpret the history of Fort Douglas and its impact on the history of Utah and the adjacent Western states.
