UMOCA invites children of all ages and their families to discover our changing exhibitions and participate together in hands-on art making activities led by a trained educator. Each activity connects to a brand new idea, medium or theme explored by an artist currently exhibited in the museum. Projects are suitable from toddler to tween in a wide range of abilities.
Family Art Saturday is offered free of charge.
Lay of the Land
We often take for granted the ease of modern travel, but the roads, railways, and power lines that crisscross our nation haven’t always existed. What did the land look like before they were built? What mark has westward expansion had upon American vistas? You get to decide as you layer a fictional network of roadways onto untouched landscapes in the West. Then, compare your collaged artwork with different ideas of American landscape in the exhibit, Grandma’s Cupboard.
In addition to UMOCA’s Family Art Saturday project, KUED will screen educational kids programming in the auditorium throughout the day. This month, KUED will be screening the popular Wild Kratts: Creature Christmas, sending home Wild Kratts wrapping paper, and exploring PBS Kids educational apps in the Cleone Peterson Eccles Mobile Education Lab.
At 1 PM, members of the Salt Lake Acting Company will perform part of Art Dog:
SLAC will welcome its youngest audiences to ART DOG adapted for the stage by John Olive, composed by Susan Ennis, and based on the book by Thatcher Hurd. By day, Arthur Dog is a mild-mannered museum guard; by night, he is Art Dog – a mysterious artist who makes the city his canvas. However, when Leonardo Dog Vinci’s Mona Woofa goes missing from the Dogopolis Museum of Art, Art Dog is a prime suspect.
